1970 : Michael Mehl : High School Graduation Organ Concert : Mexico City

By the time of my high school graduation in 1970, I already had four years of professional musicianship behind me; as a pianist performing classical music and my own compositions, and as a keyboardist with several of Mexico’s best known Rock & Roll bands.

The school administrators asked me to compose and perform an organ piece for the graduation ceremony. It was an unlikely request and occurrence, considering the conservative policies in place at the school that year; a retort to the wild years of 1967 and 1968, during which the student body, and the country at large, mirrored the political and social upheavals worldwide.

In any case, it was a formal request that I took seriously since it was an acknowledgement of my musical accomplishments at the time.
