1979 : Michael Mehl : Vacas Aureas Photography Exhibit : Universidad Iberoamericana : México DF
In October of 1979 I presented what I consider to be my first comprehensive individual exhibit, at the Biblioteca Clavigero of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.
The exhibit Vacas Aureas (Golden Cows, a more pedestrian way of saying Golden Calves which was an ironical take on the biblical connotations of the term, i.e.: turning away from the truth to embrace an image instead) included a wide variety of abstracted and female nude images (unusual in that the Universidad Iberoamericana is a Jesuit University).
A poem I wrote for the promotional card set the tone for the Vacas Aureas exhibit:
En mi sueño las ví, todas ellas.
Cruzando el cielo al ras del horizonte.
–Tres mil vacas aureas– por la serranía.
Entre sueños las oí, todas ellas.
Recitando al sol letras al hilo,
sin forma, sin nombre.
–Tres mil vacas aureas– por la serranía.
